Our History

Dr. Steve Anderson is the founder and president of Global Eye Mission. Dr. Anderson has pursued interests in both ophthalmology practice in the United States and in international medical missions in various parts of the world including Africa, Central and South America, Indonesia, and the Philippines. He had been in private practice in the United States for 12 years, specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology and refractive surgery, but closed his practice in order to pursue his passion of offering eye care to the blind poor around the world. After a 15-year history of short-term medical mission involvement with Bethesda Mission Hospital on the island of Borneo, Dr. Anderson accepted an invitation from the hospital to help their newly-graduated Indonesian ophthalmologist establish a long-term eye program to serve the poor of the region. The great need for the development of a clinical and surgical eye unit for this under-served region laid the foundation for his move to Borneo with his wife and young family—and the creation of Global Eye Mission.
