EYE UNIT

Tenwek Mission Hospital has served the people of rural Western Kenya for over 50 years. Tenwek’s Eye Unit was started in 1991 and has grown over the years in its ability to serve the poor in this region with a variety of eye care services including ophthalmic medical and surgical care, medical and surgical outreach projects to more remote sites, and optical services. Since 2006, Dr. Ben Roberts (ophthalmologist, retina specialist) has served as the head of the eye unit at Tenwek.

Progress Update: Under Dr. Robert’s leadership the eye service at Tenwek continues to expand its
capabilities in serving the eye care needs of the poor in Western Kenya. Construction of a new eye unit was completed in 2018

Future: Future plans/hopes for the eye unit include expanding the eye unit services and teaching
program to train African ophthalmologists. Global Eye Mission will continue to look for ways to assist the Tenwek Eye team in the development of this very effective long-term program.
